A winter journey with Schubert
Come sing a Yiddish adaptation of ‘Der Leiermann’ (the Organ-grinder or Hurdy-gurdy Man), the final song in the Franz Schubert’s Winterreise song cycle. Moyshe-Leyb Halpern translated it into Yiddish in the early 1900s, and Der Leiermann became Der Katerinchik. When you hear and sing the Yiddish version, you will marvel how Schubert’s simple melody with Halpern’s translation sounds as if it was always meant to be sung by displaced Eastern European Jews. Hear the sadness of the poor musician, the longing for Home, the eternal winter.
