Vote 100: Celebrating Women Composers – Brighton

“Vote 100: Celebrating Women Composers” marks the centenary of women gaining the vote through democracy in action.

‘Lead On’ – by Lucy Pankhurst, a relative of leading suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst, features among music by a diverse range of women composers. Performances includes premieres of a recently rediscovered song by Alma Mahler and a trio written in 1915 by Morfydd Owen.

Vocalists include Polina Shepherd, Rozanna Madylus and special guests including TableMusic, vocal/instrumental group HEARD Collective – Daisy Chute and Cerian, choir Women of Note, guitarist Brian Ashworth plus multi-pianist ensemble the Zongora Piano Group among others.

Music by 18 composers: Norah Blaney, Tracy Chapman, Rebecca Clarke, Litha Efthymiou, Lilian Elkington, Shena Fraser, Augusta Holmès, Cecilia McDowall, Morfydd Owen, Lucy Pankhurst, Alma Schindler-Mahler, Thea Musgrave, Ruth Crawford Seeger, Polina Shepherd, Laura Shur, Dame Ethel Smyth, Avril Coleridge-Taylor and Master of the Queen’s Music Judith Weir.
