Online – Powerful Yiddish Song course, The Workers Circle.
Wednesdays 1:30 – 3 PM New York Time: February 1, 8, 15, 22 and March 1.
One poem – many melodies. How often does this happen in Yiddish song and why? A Nigndl by Shike Driz has been set to at least three melodies, Fun Yener Zayt Lid by Rokhl Korn has at least five modern versions. How does the music support, twist and turn the meaning of the poem? A different tune can radically influence the way we experience the words.
This mini-course invites you to explore and learn these songs, discuss their musical styles and simply enjoy singing them.
All singers are welcome, although you will need to be able to follow written music or be open to learning by ear.
