DESCRIPTION:Caravan Orchestra and Choir will present their first collaboration concert in Germany in Eisenach\, Thuringia.\nBOOK HERE \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Caravan Orchestra and Choir is an exchange project between Yiddish Summer Weimar (Germany) and the Department of Music of אוניברסיטת חיפה – University of Haifa (Israel)\, in cooperation with the International Office University of Music Franz Liszt Weimar (Germany). The project will rehearse and perform in Haifa\, Israel\, on 24 July to 1 August and in Weimar\, Germany\, on 2-11 August (dates tbc). \n\n\nTogether with the artistic directors\, participants explore both European Jewish and Arab music. DESCRIPTION:Interview with an artist – event with Polina Shepherd as part of Yiddish in Berlin.  \n \nThe 3rd Summer Program for Yiddish Language and Literature in Berlin will be held at the Institute for East European Studies at the Free University of Berlin from August 8th to 26th\, 2022. \nFor three weeks\, the Institute for East European Studies hosts students from all around the world\, offering a rich program of language courses and cultural activities. \nFor the first time\, a hybrid program in which students in the same class can choose to learn either face-to-face or at a distance. \nThe pedagogical team under the direction of Yitskhok Niborski will offer an intensive program of Yiddish courses\, workshops (songs\, theater\, conversation\, cooking)\, visits\, lectures\, film screenings… \nIn addition to four levels of language and literature classes ranging from beginner to advanced\, we will be instating a three-week pedagogical training seminar for emerging Yiddish teachers. \nScholarships will be granted to allow young students from all over the world to come and improve their skills and exchange with other Yiddish speakers. \nEvents will take place at Osteuropa-Institut (Freie Universität Berlin). SUMMARY:Yiddish Choir Workshop - Brighton & Hove
DESCRIPTION:OPEN TO ALL\, no language experience is needed! \nCome and learn Yiddish songs\, open the heart and energise the body\, experience a choir sound weaving together all of our voices into an instrument of great beauty and power.\n\n \nYiddish\, the 1000-year-old language of the Jews of Eastern Europe\, is flourishing\, as people young and old\, Jewish and non-Jewish\, explore its rich cultural heritage. Yiddish songs are hugely varied. Some are spiritual and liturgical\, others come from the Yiddish theatre and cinema\, or describe the diverse lives of Jewish people across Eastern and Central Europe and all the countries they have emigrated to – their history\, hopes\, memories\, politics\, celebrations and resistance to oppression. Come and explore all these traditions and builds on them\, adding four-part arrangements of folk songs\, contemporary compositions and some improvisation\, while respecting and learning about the history\, style and cultural contexts in which the music originated and developed. \nWe are aiming to build an ongoing group in Brighton & Hove\, let’s see what happens at the start! \nAll singers are welcome\, no knowledge of Yiddish is required\, although you will need to be able to follow written music and/or be open to learning by ear. \nFees: £5 students/concessions\, £8 general\, £12 supporter. Please join us at this ‘centenary-plus-one’ concert on 17th September 2022 (Covid unfortunately prevented commemoration of the centenary)\, to which we will be welcoming a special VIP guest… \nThe Brighton & Hove Russian Choir will present a varied concert to mark the occasion. Come and experience traditional lyrical and dance songs\, Art Songs (Romances) from the 18th-19th centuries\, beautiful harmonies in classical pieces by Tchaikovsky and others\, and Orthodox liturgical pieces by Rachmaninov and Tchesnokov. There will also be Ukrainian songs that the choir has learnt in solidarity with Ukraine\, as well as some solo performances. \nRefreshments will be available during the interval. \nDoors open at 6pm\, concert starts at 6.30pm. \nAdvance tickets through this website cost £9 (+ 10% booking fee).\nRemaining tickets (if any) will be sold on the door at £10. \nThe Choir will be singing for Peace. Celebrate the beauty of world cultures and the joy of sharing music – join us in spreading the light! \n \nThe Brighton and Hove Russian Choir\nBHRC promotes culture\, unity and building bridges through singing. This evening\, the choir will present Christmas songs\, Art Songs\, classical pieces by Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky\, Ukrainian lyrical songs\, ritual calendar music for pagan holidays and other folklore. The programme will also include solo performances by choir members. \nThe coming weekend is also the Jewish Festival of Light – Chanuka. Polina Shepherd will sing a few songs in Yiddish. \nPam and de Femmes are a Lewes-based band that started in 2019 as a female foursome doing calypso interludes for an evening of poets with Caribbean roots. Later they were joined by a rhythm section of bass and cajon. They then extended their repertoire to include Spanish\, Hungarian and Polish songs and now they are a six or seven-piece band singing in languages from all around the world. DESCRIPTION:BOOK HERE \nYiddish New York is Daytime Educational & Arts Workshops for All Ages\, Evening Festival of Yiddish Performing Arts\, Visual Arts Exhibition\, Yiddish Film Festival\, an inclusive community working to advance\, contemporary Yiddish culture\, scholarship\, activism and much more! \nPolna Shepherd’s Yiddish Choir is part of this year’s online programme. \n\n\nDive into Yiddish harmonies in style and explore Yiddish sound\, phrasing and expression in a choir setting with attention to history and cultural context. Make it sound rich and modern yet with a proper nod to tradition\, embellish it with krekhtsn and sing\, sing\, sing\, because it’s good for the spirit.\nNew and traditional choir arrangements in 3-5 part vocal harmonies will be taught with sheet music and by ear.\nIf the group feels inspired\, we will create a music video of some other final product for our course.
