SUMMARY:A Cossack's Dream. Russian Maslenitsa event. Free
DESCRIPTION:THE LONDON RUSSIAN CHOIR PRESENTS: A COSSACK’S DREAM WITH PHIL PRICE\nFree interactive event. Led in English and Russian\nThe song “Ой то не вечер” – Oy\, it’s Not Evening is one of the first choices for modern Russians to sing round a table. Join us round OUR virtual table with Phil Price of the London Russian Choir for some singing and conversation. Sing with us\, ask questions\, share and enjoy!\n \nThe story begins in the 17th century. Stepan Timofeevich Razin\, a Cossack-of-Don\, led a major uprising against the tsar in 1670. He became a legend and a symbol of freedom\, and numerous songs about him are sung all over Russia to this day. Our song is the most popular one of these.\n \nIn February 2021\, Phil Price took on a project of putting together a virtual choral version of Oy\, it’s Not Evening. Members of the London and Brighton & Hove Russian choirs helped make it happen\, and members of both choirs are taking part\, and we thought – hey\, why not open the doors to the wide world? Over 40 singers from Germany\, Poland\, UK\, Croatia\, and the USA joined forces and sent their recordings. For some of them this is the first singing encounter with Russian music and language\, others have sung this very song since they were children.\nWe will hear the history of this song\, learn the melody\, and hear some of the project participants’ impressions. Polina Shepherd\, the Russian choir leader will teach a less known folk version of this song too.\nThe evening will close with the choral performance made by Phil Price and his international group of singers.\nThis event is FREE.\nPlease register here https://www.wegottickets.com/event/511502 and you’ll be sent a ZOOM link for joining.\n \nThe London Russian Choir: https://londonrussianchoir.wordpress.com/\n \n\nRelated Images:

SUMMARY:The Sound & Light Cinematic Duo at KlezNorth
DESCRIPTION:The Sound & Light Cinematic Duo play for a Black and White Silent Jewish Film from 1926 as part of KlezNorth.  \nBUY TICKET HERE \nThe Sound & Light Сinematic Duo – New and traditional live music accompanying B&W silent films from Ukraine and Russia\, 1910-1927. \nAgainst Fathers’ Will (Mabul) 1926 (43’30)  dir  Evgeny Ivanov-Barkov \nBased on Shalom Aleichem’s story\, Flow of Blood\, this film depicts the participation of Jews in the 1905 Revolution. The first version (Mabul) was banned by the Soviet government because it depicted only rich Jews as revolutionaries. Also the government disliked the depiction of the pogrom\, which showed an inhuman side to soviet citizens. This version was also banned for the same reasons\, and didn’t get screened during Soviet times. Although of a serious nature\, the film contains many comedy elements including a wonderful revolutionary argument on seder night between Kaufmann and his daughter Esfir. \nPerforming as Jewish musicians would have done in the early days of cinema\, Merlin and Polina Shepherd play Jewish music to accompany the Yuri Morozov Silent Jewish Film Collection.  \nBy transportation backwards in time with this historically accurate visual and aural experience\, these two world-class musicians bring their audiences forward to a deeper understanding of former and present day Yiddishkeit. \nKlezNorth: A weekend of klezmer music\, song and dance – normally taking place in the beautiful surroundings of the Peak District near Buxton\, but in 2021 ONLINE. First weekend in March 2021. More here. \nRelated Images:

SUMMARY:HMD 2021 with Friends of the GREAT BRITISH HOME CHORUS
DESCRIPTION:HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY 2021 \nwith \nPOLINA SHEPHERD & FRIENDS OF THE GREAT BRITISH HOME CHORUS \n ONLINE \nThe Friends of the Great British Home Chorus is a virtual choir\, inspired by the run by TV’s Gareth Malone GBHC in the first lockdown.  To mark Holocaust Memorial Day\, which falls on 27 January\, they will be learning a Yiddish song and recording their individual voices into a choral performance accompanied by photographs of the singers lighting a candle.  They will also watch a live survivor testimony over Zoom. \nThe song is Ver firt die ale shifn (“Who guides all the ships?”): a Yiddish poem by Zishe Landau set to music by Chava Alberstein\, daughter of Holocaust survivors.  The song\, about lost children\, has been recorded by Lorin Sklamberg and the Klezmatics.  The 4-part arrangement is by Lorin Sklamberg\, adapted for SATB choir by internationally renowned Yiddish singer Polina Shepherd\, who will lead and take part in the performance. \nThere will be a final rehearsal with Polina at 16.30 GMT on Sunday 17 January (and preliminary rehearsals during January with musician Jane Ward) after which singers will submit their voice recordings to be mixed. \nTo take part in this project click this link and ask to join the Friends of the GBHC: \nhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/GreatBritishHomeChorusFriends \nContact Polina about joining if you are not on Facebook. \nRelated Images:
