Merlin and Polina Shepherd Duo concert for Festival of Song
Buy a drink at the bar and relax to the music of Merlin and Polina Shepherd (clarinets, voice, piano) as they present a somewhat darker world of Klezmer for Hallowe’en night. The duo perform music from several linked cultures with improvisation, freedom and spontaneity.
Haunting melodies of wandering souls, healing amulets; half-remembered incantations, whispered folklore echoing distant forests… Join Merlin and Polina Shepherd (clarinets, voice, piano) as they present a somewhat darker world of klezmer.
Merlin’s great-grandparents fled pogroms in the late 19th century Ukraine and Romania, ending up in the UK. Polina’s grandparents escaped the Holocaust from Ukraine to Siberia. Their different cultural and musical upbringings – Western and Eastern, traditional and classical – have forged a deep connection and a unique style. The duo have performedall over the world – from Brazil to Iceland, from Ukraine to Canada since 2004. Apart from their own concerts, they have collaborated with performers of many disciplines: a baroque orchestra, a punk band, contemporary dancers, DJs and theatre productions. Their playful approach to their root traditions – klezmer, Slavic and southern Mediterranean – is full of knowledge, deference and surprises.
This evening only, they conjure a spellbinding mix of Yiddish tradition, mystery and moonlit magic.
