Polina Shepherd

The New East European Choir At UCL

venue

Hebrew and Jewish Studies/Spanish Common Room 3rd floor, Foster Court at University College London, Gower Street, WC1E 6BT

schedule

weekly sessions on Thursdays 6.30 – 8.00 pm during season.

Russian, Bulgarian, Yiddish, Macedonian, Ukrainian, Belorussian and other songs taught by East European choir leaders Polina Shepherd and Eugenia Georgieva.

The choir sings traditional lyrical and epic songs, ritual calendar music for pagan holidays, seasonal songs, wedding songs and weeping songs from East European cultures. Everything is sung in original languages and carefully translated, transliterations are available too; we also talk about history and context of each song.

The choir is composed of UCL students, staff and other interested members of the public of all backgrounds and singing levels.

We started regular sessions in 2010, had our first performance at Print Room Café in December 2010 and we always welcome new members. Organized by UCL Hebrew & Jewish Studies and SSEES.

Whether you are in a good or bad mood, tired or rested, when you come to the choir isn’t important: singing Ashkenazic, Russian, Ukrainian songs is so nice that I always leave choir sessions with Polina with a big smile.
